JOANA CHOUMALI

ABIDJAN, CÔTE D’IVOIRE
PRESENTED BY LOFT ART GALLERY

Joana Choumali studied graphic design in Morocco and worked as an art director with an advertising agency before beginning her photography career. Her work is conceptual and focuses on Africa. In 2016, she began integrating embroidery into her practice, merging her two mediums to great effect in Ça va aller (“It will be okay”), a series capturing the resilience of the human spirit in the wake of the attack on Grand-Bassam, for which she received the prestigious Prix Pictet (2019). The delicate and dreamy Alba’hian, featuring collage, embroidery, quilting and photomontage, evokes the invisible meanings and revelations of the artist’s early morning treks. Choumali is the 2020 Robert Gardner Fellow in Photography.
