Nike Art Gallery, a five-storey ultra-modern cultural art centre in Lagos, was founded by textile designer Chief Oyenike Okundaye in September 2009 with the aim of providing and sustaining an enabling environment for the growth of art in Nigeria. One of the largest of its kind in West Africa, it is a treasure trove of art in a variety of forms, with works by over 500 visual artists on display and 25,000 pieces available for sale. The gallery has been instrumental in the development of Nigeria’s cultural landscape and has established itself as a cultural hub and tourist destination.

BRUCE ONOBRAKPEYA

A living legend, printmaker, painter and sculptor Bruce Onobrakpeya (b. 1932) is one of Nigeria’s most documented and decorated contemporary artists. His work is marked by experimentation with Urhobo and other indigenous Nigerian forms and motifs in promotion of African identity in a globalised world. Onobrakpeya was a member of the Zaria Arts Society, formed in 1958 by a group of undergraduate art students at the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology with the aim of decolonizing the visual arts as taught by expatriate Europeans. He is the recipient of the Nigerian National Order of Merit Award.




CHUKWUEMEKA OSISIEGO

Chukwuemeka Osisiego was born in Kaduna State, Nigeria, and studied fine and applied arts at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, with a specialisation in painting. He works primarily in acrylic and paints on wood panels, and seeks inspiration in nature, culture and his environment. He has participated in various commissioned projects and exhibitions, including Recycled Matter (Alexis Galleries, Lagos, 2022). He lives and works in Lagos, Nigeria.




NIKE OKUNDAYE

Nike Okundaye (b. 1951) is a painter, textile artist and weaver, and a recipient of numerous national and international awards. A renowned social entrepreneur, she is also the founder of Nike Art Gallery, the largest privately-owned gallery on the continent, with over 25,000 works on display at any one time. Her philanthropic activities and projects include championing the cause of neglected women in rural areas through art and the self-funded Nike Centre for Art and Culture, which provides free training to aspiring artists. She has exhibited and given talks about Nigerian art and design all over Europe, Japan and the United States.
