Anjel (Boris Anje) studied at the Foumban Institute of Fine Arts (Cameroon), where he came to the attention of established local artists such as Hervé Youmbi, who taught at the institute. It also facilitated his introduction to Les Ateliers Sahm, where he was exposed to the sartorial elegance of sapeur culture, which would become a source of inspiration. He completed his formal studies with a diploma in drawing and painting from L’Institut des Beaux-arts de Foumban (IBAF) and an MFA.
Anjel’s vivid acrylics on canvas, drawings, video and digital works explore the notion of dependence in relation to identity. The pieces at ART X Lagos depict people with a brand-name fashion obsession who present themselves inauthentically. Anjel: “In a consumerist culture, the feigning of superiority imposes itself as a human need.”Anjel’s works are part of the permanent collection of the World Bank in Washington, among other major collections.
