Duke Asidere is one of Nigeria’s most celebrated contemporary artists. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with first class honours in Fine Art (painting) and a Master of Fine Arts in painting, both from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He taught painting, drawing and art history at Federal Auchi Polytechnic for five years before becoming a full-time artist.
Asidere works with a variety of techniques and dry and wet media, including pencil, oil and acrylic, pastels, transparencies and engraving. His upbringing in a household of women is reflected in the shape of the female form, a recurring theme in his portrait and face series. His architecture series, meanwhile, offers fresh perspectives on African cityscapes. While his most abstract works, the number and spray series, are the frames for his most political commentary.
Asidere exhibits internationally, his most recent being Mood Colour Harmony at the Splendens Factory in Paris (2016).
