Breaking Barriers: Williams Chechet

This year’s commission explores how the intersection of sports and art can be a powerful tool for social change. The dynamic installation explores how the teamwork, movement and strategy inherent to basketball can inspire us all to work together towards a shared goal.

The large scale mixed-media artwork captures the energy of a deconstructed basketball team in motion. Using Chechet’s iconic African pop-art style, materials like magazine clippings, textiles and iconic slogans become a reminder of how creativity and teamwork can break down barriers, start conversations, and inspire social change.

The audience is further invited to participate in the second installation, Rise Together, a collage that will be constructed collaboratively over the duration of the fair. Visitors will help build a collective artwork that reflects themes of unity, resilience, and the power of community - both on and off the court.

“Breaking Barriers” is an NBA Meets Art commission produced by Haily Grenet – Curatorial Production Manager and Fikayo Adebajo – Associate Curator.
